William J. Kelly Announces Exploratory Bid to Run for Illinois Secretary of State

Chicago, IL (November 9, 2021) - Veteran reporter and Emmy award-winning broadcaster, William J. Kelly, who is known for his hard-hitting bipartisan investigative reporting on Illinois corruption is forming a committee to explore a run for Illinois Secretary of State in 2022.

Kelly says that he is stepping up to fill another void left by the Illinois GOP. "We are one year out from the 2022 elections and yet the Illinois Republican leadership has failed to field a single statewide candidate. Principled candidates with a passion for public service must step up to fill that void," Kelly says.

Kelly says that the state is at a political and ethical crossroads and that the people of Illinois want and deserve change. "We plan to organize the state precinct by precinct, recruit other GOP candidates for statewide office, election judges, election lawyers and poll watchers in order to ensure we have a free and fair election in 2022," Kelly says.

Kelly says that, if elected, he will use the resources of the Illinois Secretary of State's office to help restore confidence in Illinois' elections. The Illinois Secretary of State currently overseas automatic and motor voter registrations.

In 2020, Jesse White's office was embroiled in voter registration controversies after millions of voters were sent confusing letters about mail-in-voting. Hundreds of non-citizens were also registered to vote in Illinois due to a technical glitch. White's office said the glitch was a "programming error."

Incumbent Jesse White announced his retirement after more than two decades in office earlier this year.
